Kaptein Coffee was founded by two Bering Sea fishing boat captains who formed a connection through the world of commercial fishing.
Jake Anderson is a fourth-generation crab fisherman, professional skateboarder, author, and avid entrepreneur. Jake began his career by fishing for Crab on the Bering Sea. Anderson made his debut on the Discovery Channel hit show “The Deadliest Catch” and his first episode “New Beginnings” aired in January 2007.
Fans of the Deadliest Catch have watched Jake's career evolve over the years, and have seen him achieve major success. From being a deckhand to Captain of his own vessel, The Deadliest Catch show has allowed viewers to peek behind the curtain of Jake's life and witness his passion and dedication to the sea.
Scott Sperbeck began commercial fishing at age 12 with his childhood neighbor. He would spend his summers fishing in Alaska, and then come Fall, would fish for salmon and crab in the Puget Sound.
After graduating from high school, Scott began fishing for crab on the Bering Sea. He quickly became the vessel's engineer, and then became captain at age 23. His entrepreneurial spirit led to his first business venture “Cannery Connection”, a guide to landing cannery and fishing jobs in Alaska.
During a winter storm in 1987, fighting to see out the iced-up pilothouse windows, an idea came to Scott. Using his mechanical background, he designed and patented an electrically heated film that prevents windows from icing or fogging up at sea. The result was the birth of Scott's company Seaclear Industries. Seaclear has been producing heated film and window products for over 30 years. Scott also is founder and president of Frattura Glass Laminators, a high-end glass fabricator.
Kaptein Coffee founders Jake Anderson and Scott Sperbeck not only share the same love for fishing but the appreciation for a good cup of coffee. Jake being a fishing captain, and Scott a former captain turned businessman, both rely on a great-tasting coffee to help them power through their daily demands of fishing and running a company. Coffee is an integral part of Scott and Jake's life, and it seems like every time they would get together, it was over a cup of coffee. Their goal is to source, roast, and sell coffee that customers love to drink.
From its inception, it was imperative that Kaptein Coffee was to provide a high-quality product at a fair price and to give back. Kaptein Coffee is proud to support the Seattle Fishermen's Memorial.
The Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial is a charitable organization devoted to promoting safety in the fishing fleets and easing the emotional and financial burden of surviving family members of fishermen lost at sea. Throughout Scott and Jake's careers, they have witnessed the sacrifices of the fishing community and their families. Scott and Jake strive to make a difference in the lives of the families that have suffered hardships and lost loved ones at sea.
